These programs are designed for motivated students who are interested in challenging themselves by enrolling in college level courses. Students, who pursue any of these options, must be in excellent academic standing at the Academies and meet the criteria set by the individual colleges or universities for enrollment.
The purpose of this site is to provide a description and information about the four options for earning college credit while enrolled as a student at Bergen County Technical Schools. The goal of the Early College program is to provide students with a stronger academic, financial, and emotional bridge to the post-secondary school experience.
It is important to note that when a student elects to enroll in one of these options, they in fact become a registered student at that college or university. Consequently, these grades become part of that school’s permanent records and transcripts. Regardless of which Early College option is selected, College Credits will only be earned if students successfully complete the course.
Overview:
BCTS is very proud to offer the following opportunities to our students. Students who elect to take advantage of any of the following program/course offerings have an opportunity to earn college credits prior to graduating from high school. There are four different program options to earn college credit.
These options enable our students to experience college level courses in several different venues. Depending upon which Early College option a student selects, they will be able to take courses either at their home campus, offsite at a university, or online. Classes taught at one of the BCTS’s campuses will be taught by one of our own district instructors. Whereas, any course taken at a participating college will be taught by one of their own professors.
Students who elect to take any of these courses will be asked to complete a registration form provided by the college. Additionally, students are responsible for all associated course fees. Each of these early college courses enables the enrolled students to earn three (3) college credits upon successfully completing the course.
As per a variety of agreements with BCTS, each college discounts their cost per credit for these courses. On average, the cost per credit is discounted at a rate of 30 – 50 percent. Credits earned will be directly accepted by the institution issuing the credit. However, all earned credits may not be accepted at alternate universities or colleges. It is the discretion of each institution to accept or deny the credits earned at an alternate college or university.
