2008 Regional Science Olympiad

Medals were won in nearly every event, placing first in Chem and Physics Lab, second in Oceonography and Wright Stuff, third in Protein Modeling, and fourth in Circuit Lab and Write It - Do It. Several other ribbons were won as well.

Please congratulate the students listed below for their spirit and hard work and wish them well as they go on to the States competition.

Medal winners:   Chem Lab - 1st Place - Eric Sohn and Matt Mayers - Students are asked questions regarding chemistry lab procedure and do an experiment along with lab report  

Physics Lab - 1st Place - Kevin Mu and Arthur Safira - Same as above in physics  

Oceonography - 2nd Place - Matt Mayers and Leonard Chung - Answer questions regarding Oceons  

Wright Stuff - 2nd Place - Matt Mayers - Build and fly a rubber powered monoplane  

Protein Modeling - 3rd Place - Ben Yang and Kevin Koh- Students are required to construct a specific protein ahead of time and then answer questions about an unknown protein at the tournament site.  

Circuit Lab - 4th Place - Joyce Kuo, Eric Kim and Arthur Safira - answer questions and possibly perform a circuit related experiment  

Write It - Do It - 4th Place - Jeff Lipshultz and Mark Gruczynski - One person writes the instructions on how something is built (typically with legos, K'nex etc) and the other one follows instructions to reproduce the original item.  

Ribbon Winners:  

Rocks and Minerals - 5th place - Yoonjoo Lee and Yuhan Xue - Answer questions and identify several types of Rocks  

Ecology - 6th Place - Yuhan Xue and Yoonjoo Lee - Answer questions and possibly identify plants and leaves  

Electric Vehicle - 7th place - Jeff Lipshultz - construct a vehicle that travels a specified distance announceed at the tournament and correctly predict the time it would take.  

Experimental Design - 8th Place - Arthur Safira, Ben Yang and Eric Kim - Design an experiment with given objects to measure the required quantity.
