  • Naomi Zheng (16) and Rachel Lu (16) from Bergen County Technical High School, Teterboro Campus, New Jersey

The Genes in Space competition is one in which students design DNA experiments that address challenges in space exploration. Their experiments must include the use of:

  • Polymerase Chain Reaction in space (a way to copy DNA)
  • The International Space Station as a testbed for deep space exploration 

These students worked on their proposals all year, constantly researching and modifying their experiments right up until the submission deadline. They were two of ten teams to receive honorable mention out of 375 submissions nationwide.
